Celebrating 50 years of transformative music, SWEET HONEY IN THE ROCK® continues its powerful legacy with a three-year anniversary celebration honoring its roots and envisioning its future. Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1973, this Grammy-nominated African American vocal ensemble has been a beacon of empowerment, education, and social consciousness. Known for their dynamic performances and rich harmonies, the group—now featuring vocalists Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Aisha Kahlil, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Rochelle Rice, bassist Romeir Mendez, and ASL interpreter Barbara Hunt—blends genres and generations while addressing civil rights, spirituality, women’s issues, and more.
Sweet Honey in the Rock has performed on prestigious stages around the world, from Carnegie Hall to the Sydney Opera House, and has lent its voice to major cultural and political movements, including the Ms. Foundation’s 50th Anniversary, Fire Drill Fridays, and the Harry Belafonte 95th Birthday Celebration. Their innovative Juneteenth 2020 livestream at Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Theatre reached over 150,000 viewers worldwide and set the standard for virtual performance during the pandemic. With recent projects like their original theatrical work When Day Comes, the ensemble continues to inspire global audiences with their message-driven music and unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and unity.
