An Acoustic Evening with Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt

Presented by Kirschner Concerts

The Colonial Theatre is thrilled to welcome two legendary singer-songwriters, Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt. This intimate acoustic performance features the two artists on stage together, trading off songs and stories that have made them two of the most innovative voices in music over the past three decades.

Singer, composer, and actor Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. Coupled with a gift for storytelling, this Texas-based musician fuses elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel, and blues in a convention-defying style that breaks down walls.

John Hiatt, who the Los Angeles Times calls “…one of rock’s most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years,” has always been a keen observer of life’s flings and foibles, and his insights and skill at sharing them have only sharpened over the years. Hiatt’s songs have been recorded by artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Iggy Pop, Rosanne Cash, the Jeff Healey, and even the cartoon bear band of Disney’s film, The Country Bears.

Richard Thompson (Solo Acoustic)

Named by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the Top 20 Guitarists of All Time, Richard Thompson is also one of the world’s most critically acclaimed and prolific songwriters. He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards for Songwriting on both sides of the Atlantic – from the Americana Music Association in Nashville to Britain’s BBC Awards as well as the prestigious Ivor Novello. In 2011, Thompson received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) personally bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In the USA Thompson has been nominated at the Americanas for both “Artist of the Year” and “Song of the Year”.  His recently released CD, Still was produced  by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and reached #6 in the UK charts (just ahead of Taylor Swift)!

As an in-demand live performer, the past two years saw Richard Thompson headlining dates around the world, co-headlining shows with Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, as well as the Americanarama Tour  with Bob Dylan, Wilco, and My Morning Jacket – which culminated with Dylan himself performing RT’s classic song “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”.  Thompson’s genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with dizzying energy and onstage wit continue to earn Richard Thompson massive new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos in Folk Rock history.

“Genius appears early. Legends are earned. But history’s greatest never stand on their laurels. This is the artistic arc for Richard Thompson!”

Joan Shelley will be opening for Richard Thompson. Shelley is a songwriter, guitarist and banjoist from Louisville, Kentucky. Her third album Over and Even, a collaboration with guitarist Nathan Salsburg, was released in the fall of 2015. It was an album of the year at NPR Music and in the Los Angeles Times, while Rolling Stone magazine called it, “a masterfully turned set of folk reflections.” Shelley and Salsburg toured the world in support of it, appearing on stages large and small. She will release a new record in the spring of 2017.
